The Mental Health Commission of Canada and CCHL Partner to Offer a Health Leadership Specialty in Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace

June 3, 2021

Health leaders can now boost their competence in psychological health at work – at a time when it has never been more important.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) and the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL)  are partnering to offer health leaders in Canada a new avenue to further their expertise in psychological health and safety in the workplace.

In the current pandemic context, the health and welfare of health care providers has never been more crucial. Through a new offering from CCHL, health leaders can pursue Health Leadership Specialties (HLS) and earn credit towards the newly minted CCHL Fellows Select program.

Brenda Lammi, Vice President, Leadership and Professional Development at the CCHL, said: “Health Leadership Specialties are an exciting new development for CCHL as we have the opportunity to partner with incredible organizations and hopefully influence the life-long learning and impact of health leaders as they apply what they learn directly in their daily work.”

Through the HLS in psychological health and safety in the workplace, Canadian health leaders will undertake Mental Health First Aid and The Working Mind courses, signature, evidence-based training supplied by the MHCC. They will apply their learning in their workplace and write a paper on the impact and experience of knowledge translation. The paper is reviewed by a panel of three CCHL Fellowship Evaluators, who award (or not) the Health Leadership Specialty in psychological health and safety in the workplace.

Ed Mantler, MHCC’s vice-president of programs and priorities, himself a CHE, agreed. “Now more than ever, we need health care leaders to champion the well-being of their workforce. Having taken both Mental Health First Aid and The Working Mind training myself, I can attest to their practical implications – which have enriched my ability to be a responsive, compassionate leader.”

About the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Mental Health First Aid and Working Mind Programs
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved. The MHFA program aims to improve the mental health literacy and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend, or a colleague.

The Working Mind Workplace Mental Health and Wellness is an education-based program designed to address and promote mental health and reduce the stigma of mental illness in a workplace setting.
