“When individuals tell me they’re in their 40s and can’t change careers, I tell them it’s never too late”. Lise Lamothe, member of the College and recipient of the 2021 Chapter Awards for Distinguished Service from the Quebec Chapter, decided to undertake a doctorate in theories of organizations at McGill University at the age of 40. She was able to become a professor of health services administration at Laval University and then the University of Montréal as a result of this.
Lise had long aspired to work in the health sector. She began her career in health as a pharmacist. She spent much of her career in a teaching hospital, although she also worked in community pharmacies and the pharmaceutical industry. From there, Lise began to take on managerial responsibilities at the pharmacy department and as an advisor to the management of the establishment. She subsequently obtained a position at the University of Montréal as a manager. In her new role, Lise was responsible for establishing training programs for physicians interested in learning about management.
“Some people ask me why I left my profession as a pharmacist. I simply explain to them that I left the practice of pharmacy but that I never gave up the field of health. In fact, I have taken opportunities to broaden my understanding of the healthcare environment. ” At Laval University, Lise also participated in the creation of a master’s program in business management with a specialization in pharmaceutical management, a program that is still active today.
After working as a manager in the healthcare industry and has having held leadership positions at a university, Lise made the decision to retire five months ago. When asked what her greatest accomplishment in her career has been, she stated that the testimonials of past students, whether at the doctorate or master’s level, have had a profound impact on her. Her heart is warmed by the knowledge that she has influenced the careers of countless others. “I consider this as receiving a present.”
Lise is happy to be part of the College and the initiatives in which she participates. “The initiatives in which I am involved relate in particular to the mentoring program. Despite the fact that the pandemic has complicated matters, with the help of the executive of the Quebec Chapter, we are attracting people who are interested in mentoring either to be part of the committee, or to create a support network.”
“One of the reasons I agreed to serve on the Chapter executive was that I saw the College as a fantastic method to engage my students in a skills maintenance process and to encourage them to maintain a high level of career training. The College is an excellent venue for shaping professional paths.” Being part of a group and encouraging people to develop is very important to her, she adds. Lise’s professional career and her involvement in the Quebec Chapter continue to demonstrate her dedication. She aspires to continue to inspire others to pursue their aspirations and to remember that learning new skills is never too late, as it is what will bring you the most happiness in life.
