Health leaders can now boost their competence in long-term care – at a time when it has never been more important.
Healthcare Excellence Canada (HEC) and the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) are partnering to offer health leaders in Canada a new avenue to further their expertise in long-term care.
In the current pandemic context, long-term care has never been more crucial. Through a new offering from CCHL, health leaders can pursue Health Leadership Specialties (HLS) and earn credit towards the newly minted CCHL Fellowship Select Program.
Brenda Lammi, Vice President, Leadership and Professional Development at the CCHL, said: “Health Leadership Specialties are an exciting new development for CCHL as we have the opportunity to partner with incredible organizations and hopefully influence the life-long learning and impact of health leaders as they apply what they learn directly in their daily work.”
The HLS is open to all health Leaders who have participated in HEC’s programs and collaboratives, including:
• LTC + Acting on Pandemic Learning Together (2020-2022)
• New Brunswick Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics scale collaborative (2016-2018)
• Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and SQLI AUA scale collaborative (2017-2020)
• Optimizing Practices, Uses, Care and Services – Antipsychotics OPUS-AP scale collaborative (2017)
• Embedding a Palliative Approach to Care (EPAC) spread collaborative (2018-2020)
Through participation in these HEC programs participants will apply their learning in their workplace and write a paper on the impact and experience of knowledge translation. The paper is reviewed by a panel of three CCHL Fellowship Evaluators, who may award the Healthcare Leadership Specialty in long term care.

Leaders in long-term care often have qualities such has high empathy, prioritize person-centred care, and are responsive to highly emergent environments, especially during COVID-19. This partnership with CCHL will further support long-term care leadership, including those who have participated in HEC programs like LTC+ Acting on Pandemic Learning Together,” said Jennifer Zelmer, President and CEO, Healthcare Excellence Canada.

LTC+ Acting on Pandemic Learning Together is a community of more than 1,500 long-term care and retirement homes that are all working together to strengthen ongoing pandemic response. LTC+ teams are supported through coaching, peer-to-peer and virtual learning opportunities and some funding.
LTC+ is being delivered by Healthcare Excellence Canada, with partners across the country.
