Jaason Geerts, PhD, Director of Research and Leadership Development at the Canadian College of Health Leaders, led a diverse team of 32 co-authors from 17 countries with expertise in a variety of fields in leadership, healthcare, public health, and related fields to create an evidence- and expertise-informed framework for leadership during the pandemic. This research was co-authored and supervised in part by Major-General Marc Bilodeau, MD, member of the CCHL Board of Directors.
The article, “Guidance for Health Care Leaders During the Recovery Stage of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Consensus Statement”, which was recently published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open, offers recommendations to health leaders on how to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic’s Recovery Stage. There are also a set of reflection questions to guide reviews of individual and organizational performance and capacity.
The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest global test of health leadership of our generation. There is an urgent need to provide guidance for leaders at all levels during the unprecedented pre-resolution Recovery Stage (Stage 3). This is especially important, especially if the expert predictions are correct and this pandemic becomes endemic, in which case variations of the Recovery Stage may become the new reality.
The Recovery Stage offers opportunities to address gaps and inequalities in health and healthcare, to re-assess strategic organizational priorities, to optimize work conditions, care provision, and approaches to training and development, and to capitalize on innovations and collaborations during previous stages to create a better future for people and communities.
